Our Mission

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

To forestall potential enduring negative impacts on students’ social determinants of health and ensure an equitable educational experience for children and youth across diverse socio-economic backgrounds and family situations, it is imperative that we deliver comprehensive wraparound support and services tailored to their varied needs. Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit employs trusted, caring adults adept at facilitating the vital connection between struggling students and the necessary resources for success in both academics and life. When students are empowered to address their fundamental needs at school and receive support from a caring adult mentor guiding them toward their goals, they become ready to learn. Readiness to learn shows up as improved academics, increased attendance, and enhanced classroom behavior—proven indicators of a positive trajectory toward high school graduation.

Investing in preventative support for at-risk youth cultivates resilience, safeguarding the world's most precious resource—its youth.

The Problem

Thousands of kids across the state carry adult-sized burdens to school every day: unmet basic needs, homelessness, bullying, systemic racism, the emotional effects of trauma, untreated medical conditions, language barriers, learning disabilities.

Local communities may have ample resources to address these challenges, but students and families may have a hard time accessing and navigating the maze of public and private services.
